Description

Take a tour for history buffs!  You will discover Flanders’ most enchanting city but you will also wonder at the atrocities of the first World War.

In Bruges you enjoy the view of the peaceful Lake of Love and the picturesque  Beguinage. Your guide will explain the stories and secrets behind the city’s history from the Viking period until the end of the Middle Ages. You see ‘all’ highlights: the Basilica of the Holly blood of Jesus, the Belfry tower, our Lady’s Church, Saint John’s hospital etc.

After lunch we take you to the scene of the first gas attacks of World War I and to Passchendaele where one of the bloodiest battles was fought.. We call at ‘Tynecot’ the world’s largest Commonwealth cemetery and visit the advanced dressing station where John McCrae’s wrote the poem “In Flanders’ Fields”. The focus of this visit is on the sacrifice of the British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and US soldiers. The highlight of the day is the moving Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate in Ypres.
